Small sided game 6 versus 6 with insertions (without the ball) to shoot for the goal and to attack the goal by crossing the ball

Create, with markers, a 45 x 35 yards playing area. Place the goals in the middle of the two 35 yards sides. With markers, create two lateral sectors, 7 yards wide each, along the long sides of the pitch (external corridors). Divide the central zone in 3 smaller areas: two of them close to the goals, 12 yards depths x 20 yards width, and a central zone, 22 yards depths x 20 yards width. Compose two teams of 6 players each (white team versus red team), put the teams on the pitch as illustrated: 2 white defenders + one red attacker in the left goal zone, 2 players (one red + one white) in the central area of the pitch, and 2 red defenders + one white attacker in the right goal zone. Finally, 2 couples of players (red and white): one couple in the left corridor, the other one in the right corridor. Goal keepers defend their goal (blue goal keeper plays with white team, black goal keeper plays with red team)
- The two teams face each other to score as many goals as they can
- The attacking team can move its players in the different zones of the playing area. This means players can move themselves from an area to another by insertions without the ball or by rotations. The players of the defending team can not get out of their pre-determined areas and they must limit themselves to defend their pitch sector.
- The team with ball possession can count on two external players, who can create numerical superiority and who are free to cross the ball or to assist their team mates
- Insertions in the lateral zone must be done from a different player than the one who passed the ball to the external team mate (in our illustration, white team, we see the defender transmitting the ball to the external team mate, but it is the attacker the one inserting on the lateral zone, in witdh, taking the place of the external team mate)
- Rotation expects that the external player who received the first pass gets in the pitch taking the place of the player who inserted himself for the cross (white wing, after transmitting the ball to his mate in the central zone, start attacking the opponents' defense area to try to score with the cross coming from the side
- When each series ends, above all in youth categories, rotate the players in the different areas of the pitch
- Free ball touches are allowed
- Tho goal is validated only after a volley shot conclusion, after a cross from the side
- It is possible to put two more players on the pitch, one with each team, in the middle area (central sector), where the starting situation will be 2 versus 2. Tha game will thus be a 7 versus 7 + goal keepers (for a total amount of 16 players)
- Verify the timing of overlapping or of cut with insertion in width: movement should be done paying attention to the combination of passes between team mates.
- Verify the technical gesture of the cross, which must to be done strong and tense, to help the ending shot of team mates inside opponents' box
- Verify defensive positioning of the players defending against the cross: they shall collaborate with each other and with the goal keeper, to help him coming out of his goal line. Take care of defenders body positioning, focusing on the ball and on the opponents attacking the box to shot for the goal
- Work on individual marking by your defenders: anticipation, counter action, phisical contact with attacker, understanding attacker's movements and ball trajectory.
- Take care of the movements of your attackers (and wings who insert): counter movement to avoid being marked by defenders, occupation of different areas where the ball can arrive (first post, second post, centre), correct timing to attack the goal so that the ball can be kicked or hit with the right speed and strength
