4 v 2 rondo with position changes
Summary

An integrated drill structured as a classic piggy in the middle to improve passing and field vision in open spaces

Organization

Use the four cones to form a square with sides measuring 10 meters/11 yards. The four players (A, B, C, D) position themselves one on each side of the square. The other two players start inside the square. The two players standing inside the square hold a jersey (white in the illustration). The ball is passed to one of the four players outside the square.

Description

  • At the coach’s starting signal, the four outside players (A, B, C, D) play a classic rondo trying to maintain possession of the ball
  • The goal of the two players inside the square is to intercept passes
  • If an inside player steals the ball, they take the place of the outside player from whom they intercepted the pass
  • Upon a specific signal from the coach (verbal or whistle), the player in possession of the ball passes to a teammate and switches positions with the two teammates who did not receive the ball (see example in the figure)

Rules

  • The position swap occurs every time the coach gives the signal
  • The four players maintaining possession can play the ball one-touch or with free touches; this allows for better possession management when the position swap occurs at the coach’s signal
  • The two players stationed inside the square do not wear their jerseys but hold them in their hands so that, once they intercept the ball, they can quickly switch positions with the outside players by passing the jersey from hand to hand
  • If, after 30 seconds, one of the two players inside the square has not yet recovered the ball, the coach swaps them with one of the four outside players

Variations

  1. During the rondo, the four players are allowed a maximum of two touches (receiving and passing)
  2. After each pass, they switch positions without any signal from the coach
  3. Add a fifth player (E) inside the square who can act as a target for the four teammates on the outside (A, B, C, D)

Coaching Points

  • Pay attention to the time between control and pass, aiming to minimize it
  • Pay attention to the player’s body orientation, ensuring it is “open” toward the direction of play and teammates
  • Make sure players do not overlap on the same side during positional switches
  • The four outside players must move along their assigned side in the “open” zone to create passing lanes for teammates in possession of the ball
