Summary

Small-sided Game to practice build-up play from the goalkeeper under pressure

Organization

Set up a 40x33-meter/44x36-yard field (with two penalty areas). Place a movable goal opposite to the fixed one. Two teams of four players each line up on the field. The goalkeepers take their positions to defend the goals.

Description

  • A 4 v 4 game is played, with goalkeepers, and one defender must press the goalkeeper whenever he is in possession of the ball
  • Goals scored on the transition count double

Rules

  • It is mandatory to apply pressure on the goalkeeper when he gains possession of the ball

Variations

  1. Include a neutral player for the team in possession of the ball in case there are technical or tactical limitations

Variation 1

  1. Increase the number of players and set a time limit for completing the play
  2. The game is played with only one goalkeeper; the team starting the build-up must pass the ball through three gates with different point values

Variation 3

Coaching Points

  • Encourage players to always play the ball and never give it away
  • Apply pressure on the goalkeeper at the right moment
  • Help field players get open based on the pressure being applied to the goalkeeper
