Slalom in variable conditions

Summary

Exercise to train running with the ball at speed and quick thinking

Organization

Use the markers to form a 15×15-meter/16×16-yard square. Place various items (e.g., cones, hoops, poles, high and low hurdles, etc.) randomly inside the square. Place a goal defended by a goalkeeper about 7 yards/6 meters from one side of the square. On the side closest to the goal, in the center, use two markers to form a 3-meter gate that serves as a finish line. Divide the players into two equal groups and place them at the two corners of the square furthest from the goal. Give each player a ball.

Description

  • At the coach's signal, the first player from each group starts running inside the space occupied by the various equipment.
  • The first player to cross the finish line without touching the equipment inside the square can shoot at the goal.

Rules

  • If the player touches the equipment inside the square, they must stop.
  • Only the first player to complete the slalom may kick the ball.
  • The player who scores the most goals wins.

Variations

  1. Perform the slalom with one foot (strong foot and weak foot)

Coaching Points

  • Coach:
    • continuously change the position of the objects within the square
    • give the start signal when both players are ready
    • check that they do not touch any objects while driving
    • call out the name of the first player to cross the finish line and shoot at the goal
  • Players:
    • focus on the quality of your dribbling rather than speed
    • analyze the situation to choose your route in the moments before you start
    • keep the ball close to your foot so you can change direction quickly to avoid obstacles
  • Goalkeeper:
    • listen to the coach's feedback to find out which of the two players is shooting at goal
