Ball Transmission and Reception: The Rectangle of Technique - 3
Ball-passing and receiving drill with dynamic space-time differentiation
Goal:
Equipment
- 4 cones
- 2 balls of different colors
Preparation
- Playing Area: 12x6 meters / 13x6 yds
- Players: 5
- Duration: 15 minutes
- Series: 3 of 5 minutes each
Secondary Objectives
Timing, Proprioceptive informations, Anticipation, Sensory processing, Striking the ball, Inside of the foot, Outside of the foot, First touch, Oriented control, Pass, Warm upOrganization
This drill develops the ability to control the ball when no opponent is present. It builds the skills needed to learn soccer techniques such as kicking, passing, and receiving, as well as executing predetermined movements by calculating space and timing.
Set up a 12x6-meter/13x6-yard playing area using four cones. Five players (A-B-C-D-E) position themselves at the outer corners of the rectangle with two balls (A and B start at the same corner, each with a ball of a different color).
Description
- In this rectangle, a total of five players participate using two balls of different colors (red and yellow in the figure)
- Player A starts by passing the ball to C and moves to C’s position, following the direction of the ball
- C does the same, passing the ball to D and moving to D’s corner, and so on in a counterclockwise direction
- After passing to C and moving to the next corner, player A activates player B behind them in the starting position, who in turn kicks their ball of a different color, immediately initiating a second sequence of passes
- B passes the ball to teammate A, who has stopped at C’s position, and so on, continuing the sequence of passes with the second ball as well
- The players kicking this second ball, which is a different color, do not move in the direction of the ball; they remain stationary in their spots (at their own corners)
- Thus, the first ball causes the players following it to change positions, while the second ball is passed without the players moving from their positions (in the figure, the player kicking the red ball moves, while the player kicking the yellow ball does not move)

Rules
- Have players perform various types of oriented control during the drill
- Practice passing and movement in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions
- Work with two balls at the same time (balls of different colors that trigger a sequential action)
Coaching Points
- The purpose of this drill is to focus on memorization and differentiation after performing the technical movement
- Emphasize the correct execution of technical movements and speed of execution, even while moving
- Set up multiple work stations where players can work simultaneously and adjust the size of the rectangle based on the players’ abilities
- Timing of the play: simultaneous ball passing and synchronized movement
- Focus on all technical aspects of receiving and oriented ball control
- Once the exercise has been automated, increase the speed of execution while maintaining quality and precision in ball passing
