Summary

Game for developing motor coordination skills

Organization

Create a 12×7-meter/13×8-yard rectangle. Place a mini goal at the center of each short side. Two players position themselves inside the playing area to face off in a 1v1 drill, while four others stand outside each side of the rectangle. The coach or trainer stands outside the playing area with a good supply of balls.

Description

  • The coach or trainer starts the drill by handing a ball to one of the two players inside the playing area; the players face off in a 1 v 1 situation with the aim of scoring in the opponent’s mini goal
  • The drill lasts 30 seconds; once that time is up, the two players step off the field to act as support, making way for a new pair
  • In total, the drill consists of four sets for each pair

Rules

  • At the start of the game, both players must begin with one hand resting on the crossbar of their own goal
  • The challenge is played with free touches
  • The support players cannot score goals
  • The support players are allowed two touches
  • The defender may only intercept a pass intended for a wing player, without leaving the field
  • If the ball goes out of bounds laterally, the coach or trainer puts another ball back into play
  • Whoever scores the most goals in 30 seconds wins the challenge

Variations

  1. Play a 2 v 2 game on the field
  2. Increase the size of the field
  3. Add special scoring rules (for example, a goal after a body feint is worth two points; a goal after a double step is worth three points, etc.)

Coaching Points

  • Encourage players facing an opponent in possession of the ball to adopt the correct defensive posture
  • Focus on the behavior of the support players, who must take an active role and create space to set up the teammate in possession of the ball
  • It is recommended to incorporate this drill after an adequate warm-up, during the main part of the practice, or during a technical station
