Equipment
- 4 cones
- Balls
Preparation
- Playing Area: 25x25 meters / 27x27 yds
- Players: 5+
- Duration: 16 minutes
- Series: 4 of 3 minutes each with 1 minute of recovery between sets
Summary
Train diagonal passes for support and depth, as well as passing combinations, using the diamond drillSecondary Objectives
Visual perception, Peripheral vision, Pass, First touch, Oriented control, TriangleOrganization
Place four cones at the corners of a diamond-shaped course with sides measuring approximately 10 meters/11 yards. One player stands in the center of the diamond (M), while the other players line up on one corner of the diamond, with the first player in line in possession of the ball (P).
Description
- One player starts in the center of the diamond while the others position themselves behind one of the cones
- The first player in line (P) starts by passing the ball to the teammate in the center (M) and sprints diagonally toward the next cone to receive the pass that completes the triangle with M
- Player P, at the second cone, plays a support play to M before running toward the third cone
- P, upon reaching the third cone, receives the pass from M, which is returned before running toward the fourth cone
- P, at the fourth cone, receives the pass again from M, but instead of passing it back, P passes the ball to the next teammate waiting in line at the starting point
- The drill is repeated in the same manner for each player. After every player in the line has completed the diamond (a full lap around the perimeter of the training station), they switch positions with the player in the center (M) so that everyone has the chance to play this role
Rules
- When moving along the perimeter of the workstation, players must complete the movement in no more than two touches (receiving and passing)
- Have the players move along the perimeter of the course in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions
Variations
- Add a “passive” defender to the center of the playing area so that M must defend the ball while teammates run around the diamond to receive passes
Coaching Points
- Quality of the first touch: orient the reception so that the ball can be passed following the rotation of the course
- Quality and intensity of the pass to make the drill faster and more dynamic
- High intensity
- Ball protection by player M positioned in the center during the 1v1 situation with the defender (see variation)
- Pay attention to the body posture of the central player so that they always maintain focus on the ball and the movement of teammates along the perimeter of the training station
