Oriented control and shooting from distance

Summary

Practice shooting from a distance after an oriented control

Organization

Place two starting markers along the end line, 10 meters/11 yards to the right and left of the regulatory goal. One player stands next to each marker. Twenty meters/22 yards from the regulatory goal, near the two corners of the penalty area, use the markers to form two squares with sides measuring 6 meters (as in the picture). Divide the team into two equal groups and position them near the squares. One goalkeeper defends the regulatory goal. Have a good supply of balls for the two players standing next to the two starting markers.

Description

  • Player A makes a long pass to player C, who is inside the square
  • Player C performs an oriented control, moving the ball to the right foot and shooting from distance, still inside the square, trying to score a goal
  • Player B makes a long pass to player D inside the square
  • Player D performs an oriented control, bringing the ball to the left foot and shoots from distance, finishing on goal
  • After finishing, the player recovers the ball and moves to the throwing position, while the players who threw before line up at the shooting position

Variations

  1. The player must shoot the ball on the ground
  2. The player must shoot high
  3. The ball must be controlled and shot with the same foot
  4. The shot must be taken on the volley and with one touch

Coaching Points

  • The exercise can only be completed if the player receives the ball inside the square, maintaining control within it
  • Pay attention to the passes from players A and B, which must allow control inside the square
  • The oriented control of players C and D must be useful for the subsequent finish
  • Pay attention to the time between control and shot, which must be as short as possible
  • Encourage players to focus on shot accuracy rather than power
