Conditioned game: attack against defense

Summary

Enrico Ruzzene introduces an exercise to train space management and ball circulation under pressure

Organization

Create a 20x20-meter/22x22-yard playing area using the markers and divide it into two zones with the cones. On the long sides of the rectangle place the two mini goals. Divide players in 4 red defenders (2 for every half of the field), blue strikers (free to move inside the playing area) and 2 green outside players (who can move along the sides of the playing rectangle).

Description

  • The blue strikers have to shoot at goal to score a point and they can shoot at both goals
  • The red defenders can only move inside the half field assigned to them and with active defense they have to tackle opposition's attacks
  • The red defenders, recovered the ball, have to play 8 consecutive passes to score a point
  • The blue strikers, after losing the ball, must try to regain it and avoid that the opposition scores
  • The green outside players can only move along the sides of the rectangle and play with the team in possession (they play with both teams, as neutrals)
  • After each goal, the game starts againg from the central zone with the strikers in possession of the ball
  • At the end of the series the side players switch positions with the strikers. After 2 series defenders switch with outside players/strikers
  • Maximum number of touches allowed for defenders: 3

Variations

  1. Restrict number of ball touches for the defenders to 2 and for strikers to 3
  2. Add a third striker inside the playing area

Coaching Points

  • Technical and coordination objectives: passing and receiving the ball under high space-time pressure, dribbling with variations, finishing
  • Technical and tactical objectives: managing free space, including behind the ball carrier, numerical superiority and inferiority, playing wide and the concept of unmarking to create passing lanes
  • Reduce breaks within the exercise, increasing the intensity
  • Increase or decrease the duration of the series based on the age group being trained
