4-3-3 - Offensive build-up play for the shot

Organization

Eight white players line up on one half of a standard pitch in a 4-3-3 formation (two fullbacks, three midfielders, and three forwards) against two red players (two center backs). The coach stands outside the penalty area with the ball in hand, facing the goal. The goalkeeper defends the goal.

Description

  • Action development:
  1. The coach throws the ball with the hands toward the center back
  2. The center back clears the ball, either with a header or a volley with the feet, directing it toward the midfield circle
  3. The central midfielder controls the ball and passes it to the left inside midfielder
  4. The left inside midfielder returns the ball to the central midfielder
  5. The central midfielder plays the ball to the right inside midfielder
  6. The right inside midfielder passes the ball to the right wide forward, while the right high forward initiates a long-short countermovement (feigning a run deep before cutting back towards the ball)
  7. The right wingback, after controlling the ball, passes it to the right-wing forward, who drops deep to receive it
  8. The right winger plays the ball to the right central midfielder as he makes a run to support him, while the right fullback makes a deep run down the wing (outside overlap)
  9. The right central midfielder plays the ball into the path of the right fullback’s run, while the right winger makes a circular run toward the penalty area
  10. The fullback delivers a cross into the penalty area toward the center forward, who in the meantime cuts toward the near post
  11. The center forward shoots on goal, evading the marking of the two center backs

Alternate between a play developing on the right side of the field and one on the left side.

Rules

  • The two center backs can either try to block the forward's shot from the cross or simply apply passive pressure

Variations

  1. Add the two opposing fullbacks who, at the coach's discretion, can defend passively or actively

Coaching Points

  • All players must focus on ball-coordinated timing when losing their marker
  • Passing accuracy and intensity as the play develops
  • Gradually demand greater precision and speed in the execution of technical skills and movements
  • This exercise should also be included in the pre-game warm-up, lasting no more than 5 minutes
  • A very useful warm-up for reviewing the various technical and tactical skills that will be used in the game
  • Players’ unmarking movements must be preceded by preparatory counter-movements before receiving the ball (players must receive the ball while moving)
